Materials from the adobe were recycled into elements of the addition, such as the sliding barn doors that protect the nanodoor which are made of recycled redwood heartwood from an old aviary on site. The mass of the addition does not overwhelm the original home as the architect integrated the addition into the slope and used the natural sandstone quarried from the site forming a plinth that wraps around the upper patio and lower portion of the building. Another staircase descends to a spacious lower level apartment that is its own retreat. The easily accessible apartment has its own driveway, a single level open floor plan that opens with French doors all around to a trellis covered pergola overlooking the canyon and ocean views, two full bathrooms with walk-in showers, a walk-in closet off the bedroom and a fireplace.
